Severs Disease

Sever's disease, also known as calcaneal apophysitis, is a condition that affects children and adolescents during periods of rapid growth. It’s not actually a disease, but rather an overuse injury that occurs at the growth plate of the heel bone due to repetitive pulling of the Achilles tendon. The growth plate is an area of developing cartilage that eventually transforms into bone as a person matures. It’s commonly seen in active children involved in running and/or jumping.

Symptoms of Sever's Disease

  • Heel pain, often described as aching, throbbing, or sharp
  • Pain that worsens with physical activity, especially running or jumping
  • Tenderness and swelling in the back of the heel
  • Difficulty walking, especially upon waking up in the morning

Treatment for Sever's Disease

  • Reducing or avoiding activities that exacerbate the pain
  • Applying ice to the affected area can help reduce inflammation and pain
  • Orthopedic shoes with a heel lift to offload the Achilles tendon
  • Custom orthotics with a heel lift to offload the Achilles tendon
  • Stretching exercises for the Achilles tendon
