Diabetes/Diabetic Foot

Diabetic foot refers to a range of foot complications that can arise as a result of diabetes. People with diabetes are at an increased risk of developing foot problems due to several factors, including nerve damage (neuropathy), poor circulation (vascular issues), and impaired immune function. These complications can make even minor foot injuries or issues more serious and slower to heal.

Complications of a Diabetic Foot

  • Neuropathy: Can lead to loss of sensation in the feet, which makes it difficult for individuals to notice cuts, blisters, or other injuries
  • Peripheral Arterial Disease: PAD can lead to reduced blood flow to the extremities, including the feet, which can result in poor healing of wounds and an increased risk of infections
  • Ulcers: Minor injuries that go unnoticed can become infected and lead to ulcers if left untreated
  • Charcot Foot: Weakened bones in the foot may fracture and collapse due to nerve damage
  • Gangrene: Severe untreated infections or reduced blood flow can lead to tissue death
  • Amputation: In extreme cases, uncontrolled diabetic foot complications can lead to severe infection or tissue death that necessitates amputation of a toe, foot, or even part of the leg

Proper Foot Care

  • Daily Foot Inspection: Check your feet daily for any cuts, sores, blisters, or changes in color or shape.
  • Proper Foot Hygiene: Wash your feet daily with lukewarm water and mild soap. Dry your feet carefully, especially between the toes.
  • Moisturize: Apply a moisturizer to keep your skin from becoming dry and cracked, but avoid putting lotion between your toes.
  • Trim Nails Carefully: Trim your toenails straight across and file any sharp edges.
  • Protect Your Feet: Always wear well-fitting, supportive shoes and avoid walking barefoot, even indoors.

Treatment of Diabetic Foot

Immediate Treatment: If you notice any issues or injuries, seek prompt medical attention to prevent complications.

  • Custom orthotics that are designed specifically for diabetes
  • Orthopedic/diabetic footwear that is wide, deep and without any seams
  • Offloading devices (in the case of an ulcer)
  • Diabetic socks or compression stocking to promote proper blood flow
